Born in 1972 in Brussels (BE)
An artist with many strings to his bow, exhibition organiser and lecturer in formal structure (drawing option) at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts de Mons (Arts²), Djos Janssens has been exhibiting in Belgium and abroad for more than 20 years. His work, which is essentially interventionist, always takes architecture and the context of the places chosen as the starting point. With recourse to both traditional practices (painting, sculpture) and current materials and techniques applied in decoration, advertising and other commercial and domestic uses (serigraphy, mirrors, neon, light boxes, etc.), Djos Janssens likes to confuse the issue, spread doubt concerning what we see and force us to reconsider even the most banal images. Always targeting the active participation of the viewer and the work’s immediate environment, he uses means and processes that lead to evocative and surprising interpretations: twisted meanings, semantic shifts, colour associations, recourse to signs and symbols, etc. His subtle and troubling punctuations are always the fruit of a critical and committed approach to the codes that govern our society, without ever falling into a moralising or consensual discourse.
