Born in 1970 in Charleroi (BE)
Trained in screen printing and painting at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, then at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi, Stephan Vee nevertheless defines himself as self-taught. Co-founder of artists’ associations, and initiator of publications, he has been exhibiting alone or collectively since 1990 in Belgium and Europe. Present in several collections in Belgium and abroad, this multidisciplinary artist also regularly takes on the role of organiser, for Fluide in 2006, 2008 and 2011, among other things. His artwork mainly concerns a critical examination of what emerges from our societies. He questions what is instilled in us, passed down to us, with no initial approval, in terms of beliefs, behaviours or morality. When he installed a scientific collection of ‘weeds’ contained in bowls in the Jardin du Mayeur in Mons, in the middle of impeccable flowerbeds, or when he moulded more than 1500 phalanxes or multiple male and female nipples in big anonymous tableaux or crawling genetic sculptures, Stephan Vee was commenting on certain problems in our society and the subsequent alienation that may occur. Comprised of series, his work oscillates between the multiple and the unique, plays on the effects of seduction. Between being and appearing, the visual perception of an image and its material reality, Stephan Vee invites us to detect the true from the false.
