Born in 1974 in Chênée (BE)
Sophie Langohr has a degree in Romance Philology, from the University of Liège, and in painting, from the city’s Académie des Beaux-Arts. The image, whose current proliferation affects all parts of private, social and political life, lies at the heart of her artwork. Her work, which she most often conceives according to the context of their exhibition, refers to history of art and a nearby piece of heritage: Neo-classical cameos, decorative rococo-style motifs, religious sculptures, baroque drapery, ‘jolités’ from Spa, 19th and 20th century nude paintings, etc., are all revisited in her series of photographs: Les Camées (2007), Fleurs, oiseaux et fantaisies (2009), New Faces (2012), Glorious Bodies (2013), Drapery (2013), etc., or in public artworks such as Jolité (Spa, 2010) and Nus (Tournai, 2014). Whether she manipulates existing images or creates new ones, Sophie Langohr makes those that we consciously or subconsciously have in our memory, hers again. By delicately reworking them, she parodies them, subverts them, integrates an element of unease which, rather than having any mystifying intent, questions our way of perceiving the world through our media and consumer industry.
